Lok Adalat – Alternate Dispute Resolution
A Lok Adalat (People's Court) is a quick, free, and informal way to settle disputes out of regular court — particularly for motor accident claims, cheque bounce cases, utility bill disputes, and matrimonial matters. Cases settled in Lok Adalat cannot be appealed, and there is no court fee to pay.
- Parties involved in minor disputes who want a fast settlement without prolonged litigation - Accident victims seeking compensation from insurance companies - Citizens in cheque bounce or bank recovery cases - People in matrimonial disputes looking for a negotiated settlement
1. Check if your dispute is eligible for Lok Adalat: pending court cases or pre-litigation matters in categories like motor accidents, electricity disputes, labour disputes, or MACT claims. 2. Contact your district's District Legal Services Authority (DLSA) or the nearest Taluka Legal Services Committee (TLSC). 3. You and the other party must agree to attend and try a settlement. A Lok Adalat bench (usually a retired judge and a social worker) facilitates. 4. Both parties present their side. The bench helps negotiate a mutually acceptable settlement. 5. If agreement is reached, an award is passed on the spot. It has the force of a court decree. 6. The settlement is final; there is no appeal. Court fees paid earlier (if any) are refunded. 7. National Lok Adalats are held every quarter; check the NALSA or TSSLSA website for the schedule.
